Alcoholism causes multiple health and mental illnesses.</p><p>It destroys families and relationships. It has been estimated that approximately 18 million people in the United States are alcoholic.</p><p>The medical profession describes a person as an alcoholic if they have a strong need to drink, cravings for alcohol, and if they lose control of the drinking. By this is meant that they are not able to stop once they have begun drinking.</p><p>Alcohol causes both a physical and mental dependency on it.
