Colleges Continue Battling Binge Drinking

BURLINGTON, Vt. -- The University of Vermont campus is quiet, but not for long. Students return this weekend. "I'm so, so excited," beamed Sam Donnelly, a junior at UVM.

Donnelly knows the return of students means the return of weekend parties, too. The 20-year-old says binge drinking at college is often the result of having to celebrate secretly. "I'd say that people drink quicker because they want to be able to get that buzz faster, so they don't have to be carrying around a beer on the street, which you'd get clipped for by the cops immediately."

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism says around the country, about 1,800 students aged 18-24 a year die in alcohol-related incidents. Many of those deaths come in car crashes involving alcohol, not necessarily related to partying on-campus during the academic year. The NIAAA findings show many more young people are injured while drinking or report sexual assaults.

UVM is one of more than 30 schools
