Mobile Health Apps Arrive
When Dr. Brian Froelke joined emergency responders in tornado-ravaged Joplin, Mo., in May, he brought along a Toshiba smartphone with a hairbrush-size gadget attached. The device, made by Redmond (Wash.) startup Mobisante, converts a phone into a pocket ultrasound machine. Froelke used it to examine a pregnant woman who came to a temporary hospital complaining of stomach pain. “It was helpful to reassure the mom that the baby didn’t have any obvious problems,” Froelke says.
Mobisante’s ultrasound device, which goes on sale in October, is part of a wave of new smartphone apps and attachments in the nascent mobile health market. In the past eight months, products that turn a phone into a blood pressure monitoring cuff, a CT-scan viewer, and other health-care gadgets have received Food and Drug Administration clearance. The market is tiny but expected to grow rapidly: By 2015, 30 percent of the world’s smartphone users will be using mobile health products, up from 5 percent today, estimates mobile market consultancy research2guidance. “Health care will be fundamentally different than it used to be,” says Bakul Patel, a policy adviser at the FDA.

I like this device– it’s very affordable and works well. I bought one to test and have been pleased with its accuracy and ease of use on myself and patients.
In addition, it stores 14 readings so you can take it to the doctor and let him review your last 14.
I think this is a must for anyone with borderline to high BP as they can easily test their own BP at home and avoid that “white coat” elevation that is common when the only readings are in the doctor’s office.
I recommend it highly.
If you want a simple BP monitor, the Omron HEM 432CN is a very good choice. I found it very neatly packaged and the operation is very simple. I find it reassuring that the pumping mechanism is based on squeezing, I feel it will definitely outlast a battery operated pump, this also makes it lighter + No batteries to change. It does use AA batteries, and they last quite a while. Its a good product at a fair price.
Unfortunately, this monitor comes standard with the smaller cuff. Nowhere in the product description or reviews does it mention this information. The unit cost appears to be a good value. However, to get the larger cuff, you must purchase THAT item separately at an additional cost of twenty dollars or more plus shipping. If it is necessary for you to use the larger cuff, save yourself some time and order one in the $40-50 range which comes with the larger cuff originally and save waiting time – plus the second shipping charge.
