WASHINGTON -- More than 55 million adults over the age of 18 were treated for hypertension in 2008 at a cost of more than $47 billion, according to new data from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ).

According to the American Heart Association (AHA), more than 76 million adults have been diagnosed with high blood pressure, which is the most common cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of stroke and kidney failure, and a major cause of heart attack.

Taken together, the AHA data and the AHRQ data suggest that about 20 million people who have been diagnosed with hypertension are not being treated for it.

And the number missing out on treatment may be even higher: More than half of 76 million people diagnosed with high blood pressure from 2005 to 2008 did not have it controlled, according to the CDC's National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

That's not an uncommon scenario, said Tracy Stevens, MD, a cardiologist at Saint Luke's Cardiovascular Consultants in Kansas City, Mo., and AHA spokesperson. Stevens said patients with hypertension may fill a prescription, not like the way the medication makes them feel as it works to lower their blood pressure, and discontinue use.

Lets see .. a normal blood pressure (BP) is 120/80. Pre-hypertension (high BP) is a top number of 121-139. Hypertension (HTN) is a BP > or equal to 140/90 taken on two seperate occasions. The problem with a high BP is that it wears on your arteries over time .. eroding them like water pushing on a dam until something gives. The walls of the arteries get weak and eroded and plaque can build up on the inside lining. When the artery gets occluded (blocked), blood flow ceases to the brain and a stroke occurs; this is called an ischemic stroke (ischemia means lack of oxygen to tissue). Another cause of a stroke is when the plaque peels off of the inside lining of the arteries and travels toward the brain and gets lodged in the artery which interferes with blood flow to the brain .. again this is called an embolic stroke, a type of ischemic stroke. Another problem with high blood pressure is that it puts a lot of pressure on the arteries and may cause one to burst inside the brain; this is known as an aneurysm or hemmorhagic stroke. I work as an RN in a major stroke hospital and i can tell you that i’ve seen more stroke patients than I can count. It doesn’t take long to see the common denominators that these patients share. They pretty much are the same for all stroke patients and they are: high blood pressure, high lipids (cholesterol, LDL), and diabetes. If you have any or all of these, lowering your BP and your LDL and cholesterol, and controlling your blood sugar will decrease your risks for stroke. Exercise and quitting smoking are very beneficial as well (if they apply) .. good luck … Jake Johnson
