Merritt Lackey wanted to help. The Texas Tech student had always been active in philanthropy and service projects, and now she had a great idea for a record-breaking fundraiser. There was just one thing missing: the cause.
A friend put her in touch with the CURE Cancer Foundation, an organization raising money for clinical trials in cancer research. It was a perfect match, Lackey said.
Lackey’s fundraiser, called Ready, Aim, Cure, will be held Sept. 10 from noon to 6 p.m. at the Lone Star Amphitheater.
Lackey hopes at least 5,000 people will attend the event, making it the largest water balloon fight ever held in Texas. The foundation has set a fundraising goal of $100,000.
Participants must be age 18 and older. Lackey said she may bring the event to elementary schools in the future.
Terri Griffin, CURE Cancer Foundation executive director, said she thought Lackey’s fresh idea was a great fit for the fledgling nonprofit.
And Lackey quickly found CURE Cancer Foundation a great cause.

Cancer research generates millions in federal spending
What a great country we live in when you can sit with your congressman and he will give you his undivided attention for 30 minutes in spite of his hectic schedule.
Such was the case when I, as a volunteer with the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, met with Congressman Jo Bonner to ask once again for his continued support of funding for cancer research.
As I pointed out to Mr. Bonner, cancer kills 1,500 Americans every day. We know that this year in Alabama alone, 25,530 people will be diagnosed with cancer and over 10,000 will not survive.
Something I also brought to his attention, which most of us don’t realize, is the economic impact of cancer research. For instance, Alabama received more than $242.9 million from the National Institutes of Health in 2010, inc1uding $37 million received from National Cancer Institute.
We also received $3.3 million
