Aldershot and Farnborough youngsters have highest STI rate
HEALTH bosses are urging young adults returning from their summer holidays to have a check-up to try and stem a rising tide of sexually-transmitted diseases.
The NHS in Hampshire is warning youngsters who had unprotected sex while on holiday that they may have come back with more than just a suntan.
The Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust chlamydia screening team said it could offer a free test for the disease.
The trust is trying to tempt people to take the test by offering a 'discreet' postal urine test and giving patients free gifts such as a pair of underpants or 'sperm' themed keyrings.
Rebecca Perrin, nurse co-ordinator from the chlamydia screening programme, said: “Around one in 14 sexually active young people who are tested have chlamydia, the most common sexually transmitted infection in the UK.
“For most people chlamydia has no symptoms, so you probably won't know if you or your partner has it without having a test.
"Untreated chlamydia can have serious long-term health problems and can even lead to infertility.”

Chlamydia is the most common STD in both the UK and the USA. More and more emphasis is being made in the media as to how serious we need to take this and wake up to the pending consequences. Most people who have Chlamydia are unaware as often they don't show symptoms. In 2006 in the UK, over 113,000 people were diagnosed in UK GUM clinics. In the USA the annual total of 1.2 million in 2008 had more than doubled within a decade. The unfortunate thing is that these figures only made up a tiny percentage of who actually is infected by this STD.
The fact that Chlamydia can be undetected is worrying. Some of us experience some of the symptoms which include a slight burning sensation when you are urinating. For men, this can include swelling and pain on one side of the scrotum. For women, common signs include bleeding between periods as well as abnormal discharge. Chlamydia untreated can cause fertility to both male and female. Chlamydia while pregnant has been linked to both miscarriages and early labour. Less commonly know is that Chlamydia can effect your eyes too. If this is left untreated, there is a good chance this will lead to blindness. What is probably the most shocking fact of all - Chlamydia is the biggest cause of blindness throughout the world!
