As a veteran and as one of many disabled veterans diagnosed with depression and with post traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, life is not easy. It is a struggle each day to get up and to function to the best of my ability. Some people don’t seem to understand how we disabled veterans feel. Often, they try to ignore us. PTSD and depression are ailments that can’t be seen. They’re inside. And they won’t go away like a cold will.
But there is help, not only through counseling but also through therapy.
One place in Duluth where help is available is the Veterans Center at 405 E. Superior St. The center has a Desert Storm/Desert Shield group that meets every Wednesday afternoon. There is some hope for us veterans. We just need to reach out and ask for it.
It is time for Operation Desert Storm veterans like me to have our voices heard about our many illnesses and maladies, including chronic pain, anxiety, anger and more.
Many of us remember the anthrax pills we had to take before being deployed. We were test dummies for them. They weren’t really allowed by the FDA. The drug has since been documented to have side effects. Since Desert Shield and Desert Storm, we’ve realized the need to research such things. Our government has a tendency to hide the truth.
