Exercise can boost depression treatment
[Posted: Wed 24/08/2011 by Deborah Condon www.irishhealth.com ]
A new study has found that when combined with an anti-depressant, a regular exercise routine can help relieve the symptoms of major depression without the need for more drugs.
According to US researchers, when an anti-depressant drug does not work, patients are sometimes put on a second drug. However exercise may be a better substitute for this second anti-depressant.
"Many people who start on an anti-depressant medication feel better after they begin treatment, but they still don't feel completely well or as good as they did before they became depressed. This study shows that exercise can be as effective as adding another medication," explained lead researcher, Dr Madhukar Trivedi, of the University of Texas.
The four-year study followed adults who had been diagnosed with depression, on average, seven years previously. They were split into two groups. Each group took part in an exercise programme of different intensity.
