Diamond brunch raises awareness of HIV/AIDS

Women On Maintaining Education and Nutrition will host its third annual Diamond Champagne Brunch and Fundraiser for HIV/AIDS awareness from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday at the Timothy Demonbreun House, 746 Benton Ave.

Cost to attend is $25 per guest.

Donations for the event can be taken online or at the door.

All proceeds will benefit W.O.M.E.N., a nonprofit that provides free HIV counseling, testing and referral services as well as support, education and nutrition services for people infected or affected by HIV/AIDS and those at risk for the infection.

Our goal for the third annual Diamond Champagne Brunch is to raise awareness regarding how HIV/AIDS disproportionately affects (the African-American) community, to show support for families who are affected by HIV/AIDS and to honor our sponsors and supporters, said W.O.M.E.N. Founder and CEO Catherine Wyatt-Morley.

According to Tracy Depp, a staffer at W.O.M.E.N., the organization's focus is primarily on the African-American community and women in particular, though recently there has been a surge in the number of homeless men and women served.

The development has made people either to default on treatment or seek treatment in other districts or regions, according to medical experts.

“Even before one reaches home, news of one’s sero status would have preceded him or her arrival. Stigma and discrimination are enemies of public health because they prevent people from disclosing their status,” said Dr. Nicodeme Ekwala Mubiala, HIV and AIDS Programme Supervisor for the northern region.

Dr. Mubiala singled out support staff working in health establishments such as Clerks, Patient and Ward attendants as the main culprits because of their lack of etiquette.

He said this during a round table discussion on stigma and discrimination in the context of rights issues held in Mzuzu on Tuesday with the theme: “Attitudes of health personnel: tackling stigma and discrimination in people living with HIV and AIDS”

“Of course, we are having a series of courses with these cadres so that we can see change but two weeks of counselling course is not enough,” Mubiala said.
