Hong Kong AIDS Foundation senior project officer Jimmy Lo Ting-yu said the group saw 30 percent more women voluntarily coming forward to get tested at its center in the second quarter than in the first quarter.
"Out of 12 people coming for the test per night in our Shau Kei Wan branch, now there are around two women," he said.
He called on the government to provide more general public education beyond the targeted male sex workers "as those who have heterosexual exposure or have contacted sex workers are often neglected."
The government statistics show most of the new cases in the quarter belong to the 40-49 age group, accounting for 33 percent of the total, while the 20-29 age group took up 17 percent.
